To obtain a new liquid crystalline compound comprising a structure having an alkenyl group directly bonded to the 4-position of a benzene ring, and useful as a nematic liquid crystal substance for electrooptic liquid crystal display.
This new liquid crystalline compound is a compound of formula I [R is H or a 1-5C alkyl; (m) is 0-4; X1 and X2 are each H or F; (n) is 0 or 1; when (n) is 1, the ring A is a (F-substituted) 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4- cyclohexylene; Z' is a (F-substituted) 1-10C alkyl, an alkoxyl, an alkenyloxy, F, Cl, CN, etc.], e.g. 4-methyl-1-[4-(3-butenyl)benzylidene]aminobenzene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a 4-alkenylbenzaldehyde of formula II with a substituted aniline of formula III. The compound of formula I is excellent in thickening activities and improving activities of responsibility and thereby extremely useful as a practical liquid crystal, especially for a liquid crystal display requiring a fast response.
