To produce the subject compound by a one step process in high yield by catalytically reducing l-alkyl-cyanopyridinium salts in the presence of an acid.
1-Alkyl-cyanopyridinium salts of formula I [R1 and R2 are each an alkyl; A- is an anion; (n) is 0-4] is catalytically reduced in the presence of an acid such as hydrochloric acid to provide the objective 1- alkyl-(aminomethyl)piperidines of formula II in the method for producing the 1-alkyl-(aminomethyl)piperidines. The catalytic reduction is carried out by using a noble metal catalyst (e.g. rhodium) in a solvent (e.g. water) at 50-70°C under 0.3-5 MPa hydrogen pressure. The compound of formula II is useful as a raw material for a drug. A pyridine ring and a cyano group of the compound of formula I are reduced by a reaction operation of one step and thereby the compound of formula II is readily obtained.
