This liquid-crystalline silylalkyl- or -silylalkenyl-compound is a compound of formula I [R1 is a residue containing a ring of formula II (R6 to R8 are each a 1-15C alkyl or a 3-8C cyclic alkyl; G1 is a 1-14C alkylene); A1 to A3 are each 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene-pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-diyl or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl; M1 and M2 are each CO, O, O-CO, CH2-O or O-CH2); (i), (k), (l), (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1; (j)+1+(n) is 2, 3], e.g. 4-[5-(4-butyldimethylsilylbutyloxy)pyrimidin-2- yl]phenyl(2R,3R)-3-propyloxirane-2-carboxylate. Further, the compound of the formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III (X is OH or O- alkali) with a compound of formula IV (Y is H, OH, a halogen or the like).
