To provide a magnetic recording medium formed with a protective film which consists essentially of carbon, has excellent wear resistance to various head materials and has a sufficient adhesion property to a magnetic film, a process for producing the same and a magnetic disk device mounted with this magnetic recording medium.
This magnetic disk is provided with at least the magnetic film 4 and the protective film 5 consisting essentially of the carbon for protecting this magnetic film on a nonmagnetic substrate 1. In such a case, the protective film 5 is so formed that the hydrogen concn. in this film increases continuously from the boundary with the magnetic film toward the extreme surface. The hydrogen concn. in the protective film 5 is specified to 0 to 15% at the boundary with the magnetic film and to 15 to 60% on the extreme surface, by which the adhesion property to the magnetic film 4 and the wear resistance relating to the affinity to the head material are well controlled.
