PURPOSE: To increase the utilization of cadmium active material and to increase cycle performance by applying paste prepared by kneading active material of cadmium oxide powder, a binder, and a binder solvent to a conductive core, drying, charging in alkaline solution, washing, drying, immersing in a solution containing magnesium salt, then drying.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol solution of polyvinyl alcohol is added to cadmium oxide powder having a mean particle size of about 1μ, and the mixture is kneaded to form paste. The paste is applied to a nickel plated perforated steel plate serving as a conductive core. The steel plate coated with paste is immersed in a solution containing magnesium salt, then charged by 40% of the theoretical capacity in alkaline solution, washed, and dried to obtain a paste type cadmium negative electrode for an alkaline storage battery. The cadmium negative electrode and a cadmium negative electrode having no magnesium oxide are combined with a sintered nickel positive electrode to form a sealed storage battery. The utilization of the cadmium active material is increased.
