Abstract:
PURPOSE: To manufacture high purity SiC powder with favorable sinterability at a high conversion rate by mixing silicon alkoxide and a carbonaceous substance with an aqueous acid or alkali soln. to form gel, drying the gel, and calcining the dried gel in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A carbonaceous substance is well agitated in an aqueous acid or alkali soln., and silicon alkoxide is introduced and well agitated to form gel. By drying the gel, the solvent and alcohol as a by-product are removed. The dried gel is converted into SiC by calcination in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The calcined product taken out after cooling is treated under heating in the air to remove the excess carbon. Thus, high purity SiC powder is obtd.
