PURPOSE: To prepare a coating material particularly useful for matting of plastic molded articles and having excellent abrasion resistance and stain resistance, by compounding a specific silane compound with fine silica powder and a polyvinyl butyral resin.

CONSTITUTION: A coating composition composed of (A) 1 part by weight of the hydrolysis condensate (e.g. tetramethoxysilane, ets.) of a mixture comprising one or more silicon compounds exprssed by the formula (R1 and R2 are 1W6C hydrocarbon, amino, epoxy, or mercapto-or methacryloxy-containing organic group; Xis halogen, alkoxy or acyloxy; a and b are 0,1 or 2; a+b=0,1,2), (B) 0.02W4, preferably 0.1W2 parts by weight of fine silica powder (pref. silica sol) having the particle size of 5W100μm, preferably 5W30Mm, and (C) 0.001W0.1, preferably 0.005W 0.05 parts by weight on the basis of 1 part by weight of (A) + (B), of a polyvinyl butyral resin.
