To simplify a heat exchange chamber and a cooling member for forced cooling and thereby improves workability in assembly and maintenance.
A mechanical seal 10 includes: a housing 11 through which a rotation shaft 2 penetrates; a rotary ring (a driven ring 17) which rotates integrally with the rotation shaft 2; a fixed ring (a seat ring 20) forming a sliding surface 22; a sealing liquid chamber 23 formed at an outer peripheral part of the rotary ring 17; a heat exchange chamber 26 formed at an outer peripheral part of the sealing liquid chamber 23; a sealing liquid inflow passage 29 and a sealing liquid outflow passage 30; a coolant inflow passage 32 and a coolant outflow passage 34; a substantially cylindrical cooling member 35 which divides a sealing liquid in the heat exchange chamber 26 from a coolant in the heat exchange chamber 26 and flows the sealing liquid and the coolant; and circulation means (a pumping ring 24) for circulating the sealing liquid.
