PURPOSE: To enable continuous operation, to improve the rate of recovery of spherical body, and to reduce wearing loss of the inside wall of a melting furnace by constructing a vertical melting furnace having a melting zone and a cooling zone having larger diameter than the melting zone.
CONSTITUTION: A vertical melting furnace for producing molten spherical bodies of an inorg. material by melting and spheroidizing a raw material with the flame 2 of a burner 1 is constituted of a melting zone a having an effective length l1 and an effective diameter D1, and a cooling zone B having an effective length l2 and an effective diameter D2 larger than D1. Namely, the diameter of cooling zone of conventional furnace which would otherwise cause vulnerable sticking of spherical bodies is increased so that the suspending time of the spherical bodies is elongated and the spherical bodies are cooled before they reach the inside wall, thus, sticking of the spherical bodies are eliminated, or if any, deposition of spherical bodies is reduced because of decrease of adhesive property, so the blockage of the furnace is prevented. By this constitution, continous operation has become possible, and rate of recovery of the spherical body is increased, and the wearing loss of the inside wall of the furnace is reduced.
