To obtain the subject new complex which is a complex of a specific heterocyclic carbene ligand with a metal and soluble in organic solvents and water without causing decomposition and has high activity and selectivity and useful as a catalyst, etc., of hydrogenation reaction, hydroformylation reaction, etc.
This new complex for catalyst, etc. of hydrogenation reaction, hydroformylation reaction, etc. is represented by formula I {M is an ion in 1-8 oxidation state of groups VIII, IX and X metals of the periodic table as central atom; X is uni- or multidentate charged or uncharged ligands bound to the central atom; L is a monocarbene of formula II [R1 to R4 are each a 1-7C (sulfonated) alkyl, a 5-18C (sulfonated)aliphatic mono or polycylcic group, a 6-14C (sulfonated) aryl, etc.], a dicarbene or the like of formula III (R5 and R6 are each same as R1; Y is a 1-4C alkylidene, a dialkylidene or a tetraalkyldisilylene) bonded as ligand to M; A is a singly charged anion or the chemical equivalent of a multiply charged anion; (b) is 1-3; (a) is 1-5b; (c) is 0 or 1-4b; (n) is 0 or 1-6}.
