PURPOSE: To obtain a metallic carbide fine hollow body which is powder having a low density, a true spherical shape and a small average particle diameter by atomizing a solution or a dispersion of the metallic carbide into a fine droplet, feeding the resultant droplet into a high-temperature atmosphere and recovering the produced fine hollow body.
CONSTITUTION: A metallic carbide or its precursor is dissolved or dispersed in a liquid medium and the resultant solution or dispersion is then atomized into a fine droplet, which is subsequently fed into a high-temperature atmosphere where the liquid medium is rapidly vaporized and metallic carbide forming the fine hollow body is sintered or melted. The produced metallic carbide fine hollow body is then recovered to afford the objective metallic carbide fine hollow body having 0.1-300μm average grain diameter and a spherical hollow structure. The hollow body is useful as lightweight powder excellent in fluidity for structural members, heat radiating members, catalysts, etc. Thereby, the various metallic carbide fine hollow bodies can be produced by using a simple apparatus according to this method for production.
