Title:
METALLIC COMPOSITE MATERIAL REINFORCED WITH SHORT FIBER AND POTASSIUM TITANATE WHISKER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS62240727
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase the strength of a composite material at ordinary and high temps. by using a mixture of known short fibers such as SiC whiskers with a specified volume percentage of potassium titanate whiskers as the reinforcing fibers and a light metal as the matrix.

CONSTITUTION: Short fibers selected among SiC whiskers, Si3N4 whiskers, short Al2O3 fibers, crystalline or amorphous short Al2O3-SiO2 fibers and a mixture of them are mixed with 10W80vol% potassium titanate whiskers to form hybrid fibers. A composite material is produced by using the hybrid fibers as the reinforcing fibers and a light metal as the matrix. The amount of the hybrid fibers used is 5W50vol%. The composite material shows high strength at both ordinary and high temps.
