To provide an electrochemical cell for capacitive deionization, electrochemical purification, and electrode regeneration.
Two end electrodes 35, 36 are each disposed adjacent to two end plates 31, 32 at each end of the electrochemical cell 30. An insulation layer 33 is inserted between the end plates 31, 32 and the adjacent end electrodes 35, 36. Each of the end electrode 35, 36 comprises a single sheet of a conductive material made of a carbon aerogel composite having a high specific surface area and a high adsorption capacity. The cell 30 further includes a plurality of similar double-sided intermediate electrodes 37-43 which are equidistantly apart from each other between the two end electrodes 35, 36. An electrolyte introduced into the cell flows through a meandering open channel 65-71 defined by the electrodes and parallel to the surfaces of the electrodes.
