To provide a method for upgrading the energy content for charging a carbonaceous material.
The carbonaceous material is thermally upgraded in a pressurized steam environment to remove water and other byproducts. For a variety of sold/water separation apparatuses, a process vessel is used so as to maximize water removal from an upgraded charge. A heating medium inlet nozzle and a process chamber vent are strategically positioned at process vessel wall to minimize short circuit of the heating medium to a vessel outlet vent and to continuously separate hot water removed from the charge and condensed steam, and an upgraded material removed from the process vessel thereby is not discharged with accompanying free water. After upgrading, the charge is allowed to be rehydrated to improve stability during shipping and storage.
