To provide a method for preparing a hydrophilic coating for making the surface of a base material hydrophilic, and a coating composition for the method.

The coating composition contains a coating film forming element for forming a silicone resin film by curing and photocatalyst particles dispersed in the element. After the silicone resin film is formed by applying the coating composition on the base material and curing the composition, when the photocatalyst is photo-excited, an organic group bonded to the silicone atom of the silicone molecule is the surface of the film is replaced with a hydroxyl group in the presence of water by the action of the photocatalyst, so that the surface of the film is made hydrophilic.
