To provide a method for compacting a metal, which does not need preheating or sealing and inexpensively mass-produces a metal-compacted member with high strength, by directly charging a solid metal such as a metallic thin body or a metallic particle into a screw-type extruder, and extruding it, and to provide an apparatus therefor.
This compacting method comprises arranging a screw shorter than the length of a heating cylinder in the heating cylinder; supplying the solid metal such as the metallic thin body or the metallic particle inside the heating cylinder; heating it to a melting initiation temperature or lower at which the solid metal is in a solid state, while sending the solid metal to the front part of the heating cylinder by the rotation of the screw in the heating cylinder; and compacting the solid metal in a part ahead of the distal end portion of the screw in the heating cylinder.
