PURPOSE: To judge properly and automatically a time of roll replacing by counting back a frictional coefficient between a roll and a material basing on a detected rolling load and a forward slip and judging the surface conditions of the rolling roll basing on the change of the frictional coefficient with time.
CONSTITUTION: In a finishing tandem mill of hot strip mill, the time when the front tip of a sheet 1 is bitten by the (i)th stand 2, is read by a load cell 3. And a forward slip (f) is obtained by an equation I basing on the total number of revolutions N of the roll 2 of the (i)th stand till the tip of sheet is bitten by the (i+1)th stand 2' and the number of outputting pulses (n) per revolution of the roll of a pulse generator. Then the obtained (f) value and the D value of an equation II are operated by digital computors 6W8, and the results are transmitted to an operator or another automatic control device by using an outputting device 9. In this way, the surface wearing conditions of the roll 2 are quantitatively sized, and the decision of roll replacing time is optimized and automated.
