A method for detecting the abnormal fiber diameter comprises introducing the traveling monofilament 2 into a gap G which is formed so as to have high dimensional accuracy in micron meter order and to be positioned on a slit-shaped guide 11 (11a, 11b), detecting passage resistance with which the introduced monofilament 2 meets in the course of passing through the gap G by a passage resistance detector 15, so as to quantify and numerate the passage resistance based on force, dynamic distortion, or vibration (frequency and/or amplitude), and determining that the monofilament having the abnormal fiber diameter passes, when a numerical value quantified by the passage resistance detector 15 exceeds a predetermined threshold value. An apparatus for detecting the abnormal fiber diameter is given by using the method.
