To prevent gear shift shock and generation of abnormal noise by a rotating speed difference when engaging a friction plate in a target gear position, and an outer race, and to make smoothly the engagement of a roller clutch after completion of the contact of the friction plate in the target gear position and the outer race.
A gear shift control method is applicable to an electric vehicle equipped with a transmission having a two-way roller clutch interposed between a transmission input shaft coupled to a motor shaft and a gear train at each gear position. A gear shift actuator is operated and the contact between a friction plate and an outer race at a current gear position is released. An electric motor for traveling is rotated in a torque control mode and the engagement of the roller clutch at the current gear position is released. The rotational speeds of the outer and inner races of the roller clutch at a target gear position are synchronously operated. The gear shift actuator is operated and the friction plate and the outer race at the target gear position are contacted each other. The roller clutch at the target gear position is engaged while controlling the electric motor in a rotational speed control mode.
