To include additional overhead information in a digital signal without increasing the transmission rate by allowing a mapping module to map a 1st digital signal to the 2nd digital signal format of the same size frame and include additional overhead data needed to detect an error in signal transmission.
The 1st digital signal has repetitive groups of synchronizing bytes. The 2nd digital signal has data of the 1st digital signal and OCh(optical channel) overhead bytes and is generated by removing the synchronizing bytes from the 1st digital signal. A frame pattern extractor 205 is enabled to remove the synchronizing bytes. The remaining bytes are mapped in an OCh frame structure, by an OCh frame mapping unit 207. An OCh overhead inserter 211 inserts the OCh overhead bytes into the space of the synchronizing bytes.
