Abstract:

PURPOSE: To optimize a memory space for storing a look-up table(LUT) in the case of encoding a digital signal into variable length by storing a variable length code LUT having the length of 18 bits in a 16-bit ROM.
CONSTITUTION: A variable length encoder 100 has a microprocessor 20 and a 16-bit ROM 30, receives a video signal as its input from a video signal processor 10 and outputs quantized data to the microprocessor 20. The microprocessor 20 reads the quantized data as a signal source code and suitably transforms them for accessing variable length code table data stored in the 16-bit ROM 30. In order to determine the length of variable length codes read out of the variable length code table, the variable length code is processed and the processed variable length code is sent out to a transmission channel.
