PURPOSE: To obtain a coating film excellent in finish appearance and adhesion property of the film by using a specified water-base coating material as a basecoat and a coating material containing vinyl polymer and specified hardening agent as a topcoat, and forming the film by 2-coat-1-bake process.
CONSTITUTION: A water base coating material containing vinyl polymers, crosslinking agent, metallic pigment and/or coloring pigment is applied on the surface of a body to be coated. These vinyl polymers are used for controlling, comprising a water-soluble or water dispersion type base resin and monomer units of same kinds as the vinyl polymers, and has 20-80mgKOH/g acid value and 80-150mg KOH/g hydroxyl value. The amt. of vinyl polymers is 1-30wt.% of the total weight of the resin component in the water-base coating material. Then, a top coating material containing vinyl polymers and a hardening agent comprising melamine resin and/or diisocyanate compd. is applied thereon. Then, these coating layers are subjected to 2-coat-1-bake treatment to form a coating film.
