Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up partial formatting and incremental recording of a reload- type compact disk.
SOLUTION: In an incremental format process for formatting a physical data track of a disk, a drive partially formats the disk to include a lead-in area 300, a limited program area 302 and a lead-out area 304. Then, the drive formats an additional frame exceeding the lead-out area in an off-line process. With the utilization of a gap 305 between the existing lead-out area 304 and a newly formatted frame 306, the drive aligns a succeeding fixed length packet with a fixed length packet written before. When the whole track is filled with formatted frames, a host computer overwrites the old lead-out area 304 and fills the gap 305 with a new null data frame, thereby forming a fresh program area 310.
