To provide a grinding method of roll surface with an on-line roll grinder by which the feed mark and chattering mark of a grinding wheel and are not formedon the surface of rolling roll in the first grinding of the roll surface after changing the grinding wheel for a new one.
After exchanging the grinding wheel 2 of the on-line roll grinder 20 and before starting the first grinding of roll surface, grinding in trial for preliminarily making the grindstone surface fit to the rolling roll 1 is executed by pressing the grinding wheel 2 against the end part of the rolling roll 1. When the grinding in trial is executed for a certain time before starting grinding the rolling roll using the new grinding wheel exchanged, the distribution of contact pressure with the rolling roll becomes uniform even in the new grinding wheel and the generation of the feed mark and chattering mark on the surface of the rolling roll in the regular grinding work is prevented.
