To restrain the sticking among scraps during heating and to improve heat efficiency by using wood as a void material in scrap packing layer, at the time of heating the iron scrap in a melting furnace of a preheating furnace.
At the time of charging the iron scrap into the melting furnace 1 or the preheating furnace 6, the wood 3 is mixed in the range of 0.02-0.15wt.% with the charged scrap 2. The used wood at this time contains 20-50wt.% moisture. Since the wood is burnt or carbonized during preheating by charging the wood mixed with the scrap and the bulk is reduced, the void ratio in the scrap packing layer is increased and gas ventilation is improved, and at the same time, the produced charcoal and wood ash prevent the mutual sticking among the scraps. Further, the used wood is desirably crushed edge wood and waste wood dismantled, developed at the time of building work. By this method, the treatment of the waste wood not problematic to the environment and the effective utilization of combustion energy can be executed.
