Abstract:

PURPOSE: To isomerize quadricyclene and a derivative thereof easily to norbornadiene which is an organic photochemical thermal energy storage agent and make it possible to utilize industrially heat generated in the process, by bringing the quadricyclene which is a high-energy compound into contact with palladium which is an isomerization catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: Quadricyclene of formula I or a derivative thereof is brought into contact with palladium which is an isomerization catalyst, heated or without heating, preferably within 100°CW ordinary temperature range and isomerized to the corresponding norbornadiene of formula II or a derivative thereof. Examples of the catalyst to be used in the above-mentioned reaction include palladium alone, e.g. in the form of net, foil or powder or applied onto an inorganic material, e.g. asbestos or carbon, or a high polymer for use. The amount of the palladium to be applied is up to 0.1W50% for use. The amount of the palladium to be added is 0.1W20% based on the raw material compound of formula I .
