PURPOSE: To suppress generation of the shoe marks occurring caused by seizure of guide shoes in piercing in seamless pipe production.

CONSTITUTION: This method for lubricating outside surfaces in seamless pipe production comprises piercing the material to be rolled while spraying and applying a lubricant consisting of an aq. soln. contg. 10 to 60mass% metal oxide powder having a grain size of ≤2mm and 10 to 50mass% sodium silicate as a solid content and having a viscosity of 200 to 5000 centipoises or the lubricant contg. ≥1 kinds of 2mass% dispersant or thickener in the lubricant described above onto the outside surface of the material to be rolled on the inlet side of a piercer. The time after the lubricant is sprayed and applied on the outside surface of the material to be rolled before the material to be rolled is pierced is specified to ≥5 seconds.
