To effectively prevent flowing out of filler material during welding work even if a can and a lid of a battery case is made from a thin plate material.
In the method of manufacturing a battery, an end part of a lid 2 formed in flat plate using a metal plate is welded to an end part on an open surface side of a can 1 which is made from a metal plate as a bottomed cylinder, to provide a battery case BC. The can and lid are assembled such that, at a junction part between an end part on the open surface side of the can 1 and an end part of the lid 2, the can 1 and the lid 2 contact each other at a position away from respective tips by a set distance while the end part of the open surface side of the can 1 and the end part of the lid 2 gradually come away from each other, from the contact portion toward the tip side. Here, before the assembly or after the assembly of the can and the lid, including additional process, the end part on the open surface side of the can 1 is welded to the end part of the lid 2 under such condition as a molten material is held at the time of welding in the space formed as the tips of the end part of the open surface side of the can 1 and the end part of the lid 2 come away from each other.
