Abstract:
PURPOSE: To measure the flow rate of a high-viscosity fluid flowing through a positive displacement pump with high accuracy and to easily calibrate the measuring instrument of the fluid by calculating the flow rate of the fluid from a specific formula.
CONSTITUTION: The flow rate Q of a positive displacement pump in which the volume efficiency of its flow rate is changed by a back pressure flow can be expressed [αN-β/μ.ΔP], where, the α, N, β, and μ respectively represent the theoretical discharge of the pump per one rotation when the inlet- and outlet-side pressures of the pump are P1 and P2 and the differential pressure ΔP between the outlet and inlet sides of the pump is zero (ΔP=0), number of revolution of the pump, coefficient of the back pressure flow of the pump, and average apparent viscosity of the fluid. Therefore, the flow rate of the fluid can be calculated from the measured quantities N and ΔP when the α and β/μ are known. In addition, in case the differential pressure between the output and input sides of the pump is ΔPa when the number of revolution of the pump is Na and the differential pressure is ΔPb when the number of revolution of the pump is Nb, the parameter β/μ can be calculated from [-1/α.(ΔPa-ΔPb)/(Na- Nb)]. Therefore, when the differential pressure is measured by slightly changing the pump speed while the flow rate Q is fixed and these numerical values are calculated, the flow rate measuring instrument of the fluid can be calibrated easily.
