To provide a method of operating a fuel cell generator that can eliminate or improve a plurality of abnormalities without stopping operation in the case of determining abnormality in a fuel cell by accurately and directly measuring a hydrogen gain.
One operating condition change is selected out of a plurality of operating condition changes according to the cause of abnormality for the purpose of abnormality elimination, to return to reformed gas fuel operation, and an improvement effect by the operating condition change is confirmed by measuring the hydrogen gain by pure hydrogen operation. In the case of failing to eliminate abnormality, the operating condition change different from the above operating condition change is selected, and whether the abnormality is eliminated is confirmed by hydrogen gain measurement. In the case of succeeding in eliminating abnormality, operation is continued under the reformed gas fuel operation condition under which the abnormality was eliminated.
