To provide a method of operating a solid polymer fuel cell easily and safely stopped and stored without needing supply power of water in a method of filling water in a fuel electrode when stopping operation.
In the method of operating the solid polymer fuel cell provided with the fuel electrode 32 and an air electrode 33 with a solid polymer membrane 31 held in between, when the operation of the fuel cell is stopped, a fuel gas inlet valve 11 and outlet valve 12 provided on piping which leads to the fuel electrode are closed, and demineralized water is led into a gas passage of the fuel electrode from a demineralized water tank 4 outside the fuel cell by negative pressure generated with the reduction of pressure in the fuel electrode due to the temperature drop of the fuel cell and the consumption of fuel gas.
