Abstract:

To provide a method for plugging a ceramic honeycomb structure capable of preventing the depth of plugs formed of a plug material in the cell end parts of both end faces to be plugged from becoming uneven between one end face of the ceramic honeycomb structure and the other end face thereof.

The method for plugging a ceramic honeycomb structure 8 at first cell end parts 82a by dipping one end face 861 of the ceramic honeycomb structure 8 in slurry 60 containing a plug material 830 while keeping second cell end parts 82b not to be plugged with a plug material 830 in a state of being covered with masking tape 2 on both end faces 861, 862 and subsequently dipping the other end face 862 in the slurry 60 upon preparing the ceramic honeycomb structure 8 constituted of a plurality of honeycomb cells penetrating in the axial direction separated by partition walls 81 with the first cell end parts 82a plugged with a plug material which first cell end parts 82a belong to specific honeycomb cells among a plurality of the honeycomb cells is characterized by further comprising a step of opening a plurality of vent holes 26 on the masking tape 2 remaining on one end face 861 prior to dipping the other end face 862 in the slurry 60.
