To provide a highly efficient esterification reaction process using a separatory membrane improved in dehydration ability and durability.
A method for producing an ester is provided, comprising the following process: in a reactor containing a reaction solution, a carboxylic acid and an alcohol are reacted with each other in the presence of a catalyst, along with removing water formed by the reaction using a separator having a separatory membrane supported on a porous substrate, wherein the separatory membrane is e.g. a CHA-type zeolite membrane or NaA-type zeolite one, and a pressure-reducing operation for removing water from the reaction system is started ≥10 min after the reaction solution is started to be heated or after the temperature of the solution comes to its boiling point. By this method, the esterification reaction process can be made small in scale, along with significantly decreasing the frequency of maintenance such as separatory membrane's exchange.
