Abstract:

To provide a method for producing a hydroxymethyl group-containing norbornene derivative, comprising reducing norbornenecarboxylic acid with a specific reducing agent, by which the hydroxymethyl group-containing norbornene derivative useful as an optical material can industrially safely be obtained at a low cost.

This method for producing the hydroxymethyl group-containing norbornene derivative represented by the general formula (3) [R1, R2, and R3 are each independently H or an alkyl which may be substituted with one or more halogen atoms; (n) is 0 or 1] is characterized by reducing the carboxy group of a compound represented by the general formula (1) with a compound represented by the general formula (2): XAlH2(OY)2 or XAlH(OY)3 (X is sodium atom or lithium atom; Y groups are each independently an alkyl or an alkoxyalkyl).
