To provide a method for producing a hydroxymethyl group-containing norbornene derivative, comprising reducing norbornenecarboxylic acid with a specific reducing agent, by which the hydroxymethyl group-containing norbornene derivative useful as an optical material can industrially safely be obtained at a low cost.
