To provide a method for producing a new sheetlike material by which an increase in density is suppressed and dimensional stability is improved to afford an enhancement of paper strength in production of the sheetlike material consisting essentially of cellulose fibers.
A wet web is produced from a paper stock obtained by adding an organic high polymer having the softening point not lower than room temperature to the cellulose fibers as a principal component. The resultant wet web is then dried with superheated steam or a gas consisting essentially of the superheated steam. The organic high polymer is preferably a polyvinyl alcohol binder fiber or an organic synthetic fiber binder fiber having a core-sheath double structure. The ratio of the added organic high polymer to the cellulose fibers is preferably 0.5-30 mass%.
