PURPOSE: To profitably obtain quinaldine by reacting quinoline with a 1-2C alkanol in the presence of a metal selected from iron, nickel and cobalt as a catalyst in a high boiling point aliphatic solvent, while preventing the production of by-products.
CONSTITUTION: Quinoline is reacted with a 1-2C alkanol in the presence of a metal selected from iron, nickel and cobalt as a catalyst in a high boiling point aliphatic solvent such as n-decane or n-undecane to obtain quinaldine. A Naney catalyst or a stabilized nickel catalyst is preferable as the catalyst because of exhibiting a large catalyst activity. The catalyst is used in an amount of 0.001-10 pts.wt., preferably 0.01-1 pt.wt., per pt.wt. of the quinoline. The reaction is preferably carried out under conditions comprising 180-300°C, 5-40 kg/cm2, and 0.5-30hr. The high boiling point aliphatic solvent is preferably a solvent having a boiling point of 150-400°C and a melting point of ≤20°C, such as n-decane, n-undecane, dodecane, cyclododecane, or decalin. The quinaldine is useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, dyestuffs, etc.
