PURPOSE: To regenerate a deactivated catalyst by bringing a mixture composed of a specific ratio of steam and air into contact with the natural catalyst contg. iron under specific conditions thereby increasing its cristallinity value at the time of regeneration of the catalyst described above.
CONSTITUTION: In the regeneration of the naturally existing catalyst contg. about 10 to 70 wt.% iron as metal, this deactivated catalyst is brought into contact with the mixture of a steam/air ratio = 1 to 20:1 for a time 0.1 to 20 hours at a flow rate 0.1 to 50 l/min of this mixture, temp. 200 to 700°C and pressure 0.3 to 80 atm. The contact is so regulated that the catalyst has physical nature of 1.0 to 6.5 in the cristallinity value (an average value of the relative intensity of a diffraction ray (i) having Miller indices equal to 104, 110, 116 and 012 of the regenerated catalyst). The deactivated catalyst is thus regenerated by hydrogenation conversion of a heavy hydrocarbon supply feedstock.
