Abstract:

To find out a microorganism capable of removing NH4+ and NO3- simultaneously and use it for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment etc.; to obtain a thermoduric bacterium which shows the nitrification/denitrification capacity even under high temperature.

Bacillus licheniformis strain T-7-2 (FERM P-19418) isolated from soil is capable of simultaneously removing NH4+ and NO3- in a growing environment at high temperature such as 50°C, and exhibits the properties of a thermoduric bacterium removing NH4+ and NO3- at 30°C. Consequently, when the strain T-7-2 is used for the wastewater treatment etc., it can be used under high- and low-temperature conditions and under a condition where temperature changes abruptly.
