Abstract:

To provide a method for replacing an oil bath seal, which allows service operators to replace an old style tone ring type target with a newer, preferred encoder style ring when the oil bath seal is replaced on the vehicle.

The method for replacing the oil bath seal 16 includes: a step of providing a stationary spindle 12; a step of providing a hub 14 rotatably supported on the spindle 12; and a step of removing the used oil bath seal from an interstitial space between the hub 14 and the spindle 12. The used oil bath seal has an integrated tone ring type target, and moreover includes a step of mounting a new oil bath seal 16 in the interstitial space between the hub 14 and the spindle 12. The new oil bath seal 16 has the encoder style ring target including an encoder ring 56 with a plurality of magnetically polarized sectors alternating between North and South polarities.
