To provide a method of treating a harmful substance in exhaust gas while removing suspended particulate matter (SPM) contained in the exhaust gas.
An apparatus to be used in this method is provided with first and second filters 12A, 12B for alternately collecting or catching harmful substance in the exhaust gas 11 flowing in a ventilation pipe 10, a heat exchanger 13 arranged on the upstream side from the filters 12A, 12B for recovering the heat of the gas 11, a bypass pipe 14 for introducing the exhaust gas of high temperature into the filters 12A, 12B from the upstream side from the exchanger 13 and the first and second switching valves 15, 16 for switching the flow passages of the exhaust gas. The harmful substance condensed/solidified by exchanging the heat of the gas 11 by the exchanger 13 to lower the temperature of the gas 11 is collected by the filter 12A. At the same time the harmful substance collected beforehand by the filter 12B is burned catalytically by the exhaust gas of high temperature by spraying a catalyst 20 from a catalyst spraying means toward the filter 12B.
