To provide a method for using a graphite-intercalation compound freely expandable by heat which compound is usable for producing fireproof packing and expands to fit for a way out opened on a floor and/or a ceiling and other openings of a constructed place or the like, and to provide a method for producing the graphite-intercalation compound.

The method for using at least one graphite-intercalation compound containing (A) at least one metal halide of at least one element of Fe, Al, Sb, Zn, Y, Cr or Ni and (B) a nitroalkane of the general formula: CH3(CH2)nNO2 (n is an integer of 0-10) is provided, wherein, the graphite-intercalation compound is at least freely expandable by heat, comprises a polymer matrix and has at least one nitroalkane comprising structural isomers or a mixture as a expandable fireproof additive. And a method for producing the graphite-intercalation compound by intercalating the metal halide in the presence of the nitroalkane is provided.
