PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform worked surface having excellent flatness and face roughness by using the +Z direction as the standard, and determining the direction at a specified angle in the counterclockwise direction as the working direction at the time of working a Y cut face of an LiNbO3 single crystal. CONSTITUTION:A work 2 of the LiNbO3 single crystal, the Y cut face of which is to be worked, is fixed to a work holder 4 with a wax in one of the directions at 40+ or -5 deg., 135+ or -5 deg., 225+ or -5 deg., and 320+ or -5 deg. in the counterclockwise direction with the +Z direction as the standard cutting direction. The work holder 4 is then fixed to a tip of a main spindle 1 of a lathe by a vacuum chuck utilizing negative pressure. The spindle 1 is then rotated clockwise, a bite 3 provided with a diamond chip 3a on its tip is moved in the direction as shown by the arrow 5 from the outside of the work 2 to the center, a face 2a to be worked is successively turned from the outer periphery of the work 2, and a turned face 2b is formed.
