NEW MATERIAL: Methyl-2-tert-butyl-5-thiophenol.
USE: A stabilizer of a vinyl chloride polymer and a chain transfer agent or peptizer for a radical polymer. This new material is a refractive liquid colorless and transparent at 20°C, soluble in an org. solvent but insoluble in water, has a refractive index of 1.5480 and a citronella smell and has no unpleasant sulfur smell and simultaneously shows good properties as a chain transfer agent and excellent stability for a plastic film without being transferred to other especially during use.
PROCESS: p-tert-Butyltoluene is directly chlorosulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid in trichloroethylene to obtain tert-butyl-4-toluenesulfonyl-2-chloride which is, in turn, reduced by a zincsulfuric acid coupler to easily obtain methyl-2-tert- butyl-5-thiophenol being a novel substance.
