PURPOSE: To safely obtain the subject compd. useful as a catalyst for polymn. reaction and a curing agent in high purity and in high yield without generating spontaneous decomposition by reacting an aralkylacarbinol with hydrogen peroxide under an acidic condition in the presence of an acid binder.
CONSTITUTION: An aralkylcarbinol represented by formula I (wherein (n) is 1, 2 or 3, Ar is a halogen, phenyl or naphthyl which may be substd. by a 1-5C branched chain or straight chain alkyl group, R1 and R2 and a lower alkyl and alkyl groups R1, R2 have 2-4C-atoms in total) is reacted with hydrogen peroxide under an acidic condition in the presence of an acid binder in a solvent pref. like dimethyl phthalate at 35-50°C to obain a comps. represented by formula II. As the acid binder, sodium sulfate or ammonium hydrogen sulfate is cited. The molar ratio of an acid and the acid binder is acid/acid binder =1/2-2/1 and the concn. of the acid is pref. 1-10 wt.% in an aq. phase.
