A DC power of a rectifier circuit 3 connected to an AC power supply 1 is converted to an AC current by the inverter circuit 4 to drive the motor 5 and the inverter circuit 4 is controlled by a rotor position detecting means 6 detecting the position of the rotor of the motor 5 and a control means 13. In starting the motor 5, the control means 13 performs a rectangular-wave drive by a rectangular wave drive means having a first energization ratio of the inverter circuit 4, while, after the starting, it performs sine wave drive by a sine wave drive means having a second energization ratio control means controlling the energization ratio of the inverter circuit 4, and in shifting from the starting, it controls the energization ratio controlled by the second energization ratio control means according to the energization ratio controlled by the first energization ratio control means.
