Abstract:

PURPOSE: To carry out selective hydrogenation effectively with a small amount of a catalyst in producing a selectively hydrogenated conjugated diene polymer with a titanium hydrogenating catalyst by empolying an alkyl benzoate as a hydrogenation promoter.
CONSTITUTION: A process for selective hydrogenation of conjugated diene polymer comprises: (A) (co)polymerizing a conjugated diene with an organo alkali metal polymerization initiator in a suitable solvent to produce a living polymer, (B) terminating the polymerization by the addition of hydrogen and (C) subsequently selectively hydrogenating the double bonds in the conjugated diene units of the terminated polymer by bringing the polymer into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium compound of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each a halogen, 1-8C alkyl, alkoxy, etc.), and in the absence of a lithium hydrocarbon and an alkoxy lithium compound, wherein an alkyl benzoate, preferably methyl benzoate, as a hydrogenation promoter is added in such an amount that the molar ratio of titanium to the alkyl benzoate is 1:1 to 6:1 and the hydrogenation is carried out at a temperature of 0-120°C and at a partial pressure of hydrogen of 1-84 bar.
