PURPOSE: To prevent the development of uneven solidified mark and ripped surface by providing electrically conductive refractory in parallel with a roll axis on a side dam so as to be positioned below the molten metal surface in a well.
CONSTITUTION: The side dam 2 is brought into close contact with the end surfaces of the rolls 1a, 1b and the molten metal is supplied from a pouring nozzle 3 to form the well 4. The molten metal is cooled with the rolls 1a, 1b to form the solidified shells 5a, 5b and these shells are discharged as a cast slab 6. A decelerating member 7 composed of the electrically conductive refractory is fitted to the side dam 2 in parallel with the roll axis. The decelerating member 7 is constituted in a box-state and of porous plate to decelerate the molten metal flowing speed. Since the decelerating member 7 is arranged not to project on the molten metal surface, the molten metal is not cooled with air, etc., and undersirable solidified shell is not developed. The decelerating member 7 has good electric conductivity, and the electrically conductive heating can be executed, and preheating with a gas burner is unnecessary before starting the casting.
