To obtain the subject new compound having excellent hard water resistance, cleaning power, frothing property, safety to the environment and human body and also excellent in handleability and useful as a surfactant or a cleaning agent.

This anionic compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is a 6-22C straight or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; AO is a 2-4C straight or branched-chain oxyalkylene; (m) is an integer of 1-50; Z is carboxyl, carboxymethyl, sulfuric acid ester residue, etc.) or its salt, e.g. C12H25 OCH2CH(OCH2COONa)CH2O(C2H4O)6CH3. The compound of formula I can be produced by using an alkyl glycidyl ether of formula II as a starting raw material, subjecting the raw material to ringopening addition etherification reaction with a polyalkylene glycol or a polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ether and introducing an anionic functional group into the molecule.
