Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a new compound useful as a herbicide, obtainable in an industrially advantageous way from a feedstock compound with its cyclopropane ring and lower alkyl group at 5-site being in trans-configuration.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R3 is alkyl, phenyl, heterocycle, etc.), e.g. 3-(3-methoxy-2methyl-4-methylsulfonylbenzoyl)-cis-5- hydroxycarbonyl-trans-5-methyl-cis-bicyclo[4,1,0]heptane-2,4-dione. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by hydrolyzing a compound of formula II (R2 is lower alkyl). This hydrolysis is preferably made in a solvent selected from among alcohols, water and mixed solvents thereof using an alkali such as NaOH or KOH at room temperature.
