To obtain the subject new compound useful as an antibiotic having potent antimycotic activity, low cytotoxicity to animal cells, and industrially mass-producible as well by culturing bacteria belonging to Myxobacterales and by subjecting the resultant culture solution to extraction.
This new compound is a compound (SMP-2) of the formula or a phototransformed isomer thereof. The compound of the formula is obtained by culturing bacteria belonging to Myxobacterales newly isolated from the marine environment, e.g. bacteria AJ13395 (FERM-17162), in a medium containing salt and the like at levels equivalent to those in seawater and containing nutrients including carbon source and nitrogen source (e.g. casein, gluten, amino acid mixture) pref. at pH 6, at 10-38°C for 5-14 days, followed by extraction from the resulting cultured product. The compound of the formula has potent antifungal activity to various kinds of fungi and yeasts such as of Candida and filamentous fungi such as of Aspergillus as well.
